Pete Davidson is set to return to Saturday Night Live this weekend for a nostalgic celebration.
The special event, titled SNL50: The Anniversary Celebration, will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock on Sunday, February 16, at 8 PM, featuring many beloved former and current cast members.
Davidson is among the notable former cast members joining the celebration. He has changed significantly since his days as a young comedian, having lost 20 pounds, achieved sobriety, and become single. The 31-year-old reflects on his audition for the show in 2014 with nostalgia.
At that audition, he was just 20 years old, wearing a Spiderman shirt, and was moved to tears when reminiscing about it recently. “Seeing the innocence in my eyes made me feel so sad,” he shared with Page Six. “Showbiz is incredibly tough, and I was unaware of how challenging it would be.”
He remarked, “It wasn’t the best choice for someone dealing with mental illness. I’m one of the most insecure and sad people, and I entered a business filled with insecurities and sadness.”
Opening up about his challenges
Davidson has consistently been open about his battles with sobriety and mental health issues, including borderline personality disorder and PTSD.
He expressed the challenges he faced being one of the youngest on SNL, stating, “Everyone was a decade older than me, making it hard to fit in. Everyone was getting married and starting families while I just wanted to play video games with them.” He found solace in his friendship with Lorne Michaels.
Davidson recalled, “Lorne said, ‘I’m unsure what to do with you, but I recognize you belong here.’ That moment was transformative. I owe him my entire career and value him as one of my closest friends.”
Reflecting on his journey, Davidson confesses to having no regrets and eagerly anticipates the reunion with his peers at the special event. “Every week feels like a tough challenge,” he joked. “But true to SNL spirit, everything will eventually come together.”
