Prince William and Prince Harry’s ongoing feud has limited public displays of the brothers sharing jovial moments at royal events. However, a common occurrence that brings them together despite their strained relationship is moments of sorrow and tragedy.
The most recent unfortunate event that necessitated their presence in the same location was a memorial service for their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes. Harry crossed the Atlantic to attend the service at St. Mary’s Church in Snettisham, Norfolk. Lord Robert was married to Lady Jane Fellowes, who is Princess Diana’s sister. Past occasions where both princes were present include the funerals of their grandparents, Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II. Despite attending these events together with their spouses, Harry mentioned that their relationship remained strained, as they walked behind yet another coffin draped in the Royal Standard.
Reports from The Sun indicated that there was no demonstrable closeness between William and Harry at Lord Robert’s memorial. Observers mentioned a lack of interaction between the brothers, maintaining a noticeable distance. Despite some suggesting that Harry might skip the event to avoid drama, his attendance was likely appreciated by Lady Jane.
Lady Jane Fellowes and Prince Harry Share a Special Bond
Lord Robert Fellowes, who also served as Queen Elizabeth II’s private secretary, was well-acquainted with internal family tensions. Back in 1997, there was reported discord between him and King Charles III regarding Princess Diana’s emotional funeral. Allegedly, Charles made a harsh remark to Lord Robert in the heat of the moment.
Lord Robert’s service coincided with the nearing anniversary of Princess Diana’s passing. One rare occasion that saw Prince Harry and Prince William come together was the unveiling of their mother’s statue in 2021, on what would have been her 60th birthday. Lady Jane Fellowes, sharing a close bond with Harry, has been seen at significant family events, including the christening of Harry’s son Archie in 2019 and reading at Meghan Markle and Harry’s wedding in 2018. More recently, she joined with other Spencer family members to celebrate the Invictus Games’ 10th anniversary in May 2024, supporting Harry.
Reverend Dan Tansey, who conducted Lord Robert’s service, mentioned to The Sun that he did not witness any exchange of greetings between Harry and William. Nevertheless, he expressed the importance it held for Lord Robert to have both brothers present, emphasizing the deep affection he and Lady Jane hold for them.
