Ryan Reynolds Reflects on Marvel’s Gambit Fascination Following Deadpool and Wolverine Success

Ryan Reynolds accepts that Marvel became "obsessed" with Gambit after Deadpool & Wolverine

One of the notable successes of last summer was Deadpool & Wolverine. This film marks Marvel Studios’ only release for 2024 and has proved to be a win for Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and also sees the introduction of Channing Tatum as Gambit.

Initially, there were plans for a Gambit feature starring Tatum before Fox was acquired by Disney. However, following the negative feedback on the latest X-Men films, Fox scrapped the project.

Despite this setback, Ryan Reynolds and his writing team decided to feature Gambit, a character originally created by Jim Lee, Chris Claremont, and Mike Collins, which generated much excitement among fans.

Marvel’s Fascination with Gambit

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan Reynolds shared his personal experience during the Fox and Disney merger, drawing parallels with Tatum’s journey.

He stated, “What really matters is proving that it works. Sometimes they just need to witness it for themselves. Channing’s unique portrayal of the character is what stands out.”

Reynolds also revealed that the success of Deadpool & Wolverine has spurred an intense interest in bringing Gambit into more Marvel films.

He remarked, “While I’m not privy to Marvel’s internal discussions on budgets, I can tell they are quite fixated on him (Tatum) in that role.”

Thanks to the film’s favorable box office results, fans can expect Deadpool and Wolverine to reappear in future projects, including the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars.

Deadpool & Wolverine will be available on the Disney+ streaming service starting November 12 and is already accessible for purchase in physical and digital formats in the U.S.
