Two prominent figures in the world of sports betting, Lucy Burdge and Taylor Mathis, are embroiled in a heated feud. The controversy originated from a seemingly innocent concept – discussing sports bets while taking a stroll – and has now escalated into a public showdown on social media, with allegations of plagiarism and public confrontations.
Lucy Burdge, a well-known sports betting host at Audacy, accused fellow influencer Taylor Mathis of appropriating her unique idea of “walking bets,” where she shares her betting insights while walking.
The disagreement became public on X (previously Twitter), where Burdge reacted to a Barstool Sports video in which Mathis boasted about the popularity of her walking bets videos.
“Her videos are straight robbery from me,” claimed Burdge on X, targeting Mathis following a video where CEO Dave Portnoy critiqued an employee’s viewership. Mathis responded with, “Walking bets get more views,” accompanied by a shrug emoji, igniting a series of heated exchanges.
Supporters Take Sides
Burdge found support as another X user accused Mathis of content theft. The user stated, “@TMathSports steals all her content. She’s a fraud. Lucy finally called her out.” Burdge concurred with this sentiment, replying, “Had to. Enough is enough.”
Mathis, with over 125,000 X followers and a massive 270,000 Instagram followers, was caught off guard by the accusations. On X, she expressed her disappointment at Burdge’s public criticism and its impact.
“Being publicly torn down by another woman in the industry wasn’t on my agenda today,” tweeted Mathis. “I believed Lucy and I were on good terms. I strive to support her content and never denied she initiated walking bets.”
Resilience in the Face of Controversy
The conflict appeared to unsettle Mathis, who momentarily hinted at discontinuing her walking bets videos. She pondered on X, “Have the walking bets come to a conclusion?” citing the internet drama as unappealing. However, shortly after, she rebounded, resuming her content by sharing five top MLB bets in a new video.
“I started the day feeling down,” she admitted, “But after a chat with my mom, I decided to be true to myself and carry on.”
With tensions high, the resolution of this social media conflict remains unclear. One thing is certain – both Burdge and Mathis are resolute in asserting their positions in the sports betting sphere, regardless of who originally introduced the concept of walking bets.
