Ron Ely, famed for his role as Tarzan in the 1960s television series, passed away on September 29, 2023, at the age of 86. His death certificate indicates he succumbed to end-stage heart disease.
The announcement of his death was made by his daughter, Kirsten Ely, who shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram on October 23, commemorating her father as a hero and a source of positive inspiration.
Born in Los Angeles in 1938, Ely embarked on his entertainment journey in the 1950s and skyrocketed to fame in 1966 when he portrayed Tarzan in NBC’s revamped series inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs’ creation.

Ely starred as Tarzan during the show’s three-year run, which concluded in 1968. Though the series didn’t achieve blockbuster status, Ely became a notable figure in 1960s television.
His career included appearances in popular shows such as Wonder Woman, The Love Boat, and Fantasy Island, as well as a lead role in the 1975 film, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze.
While his portrayal of Tarzan significantly impacted pop culture, Ely was also recognized for his skills as a writer, coach, and leader, earning admiration for his character and influence on others.
The Challenges in Ron Ely’s Life
Ely faced significant hardships in his life. In 2019, tragedy struck when his wife, Valerie Lundeen Ely, was killed in their Santa Barbara, California home. Reports confirmed she was stabbed to death, and amidst the turmoil, Ely’s son, Cameron, was shot and killed by police after they responded to a domestic disturbance.
The police claimed that Cameron was responsible for his mother’s death, leading Ely to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department. However, a jury ultimately sided with the police, deeming the lethal force used as justified.
Despite the challenges he faced, Ron Ely is fondly remembered for his strong character and legacy as a television icon. His contributions on screen and the positive impact he had on those around him will endure.
