Tragedy has struck the hip-hop world with the unexpected loss of DJ Unk, born Anthony Leonard Platt, at the age of 43. The talented artist, famous for his tracks “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” sadly passed away this past Friday.
DJ Unk gained national attention in the mid-2000s with his smash hit “Walk It Out,” which soared into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Beginning his career with the Southern Style DJs, he later joined Big Oomp Records in 2000. His second album, 2econd Season, released in 2008, reached No. 15 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

The news was shared by his wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, via social media, who asked for privacy during this painful time. She expressed her sorrow, stating, “Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband, and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same.”
The music industry is currently honoring DJ Unk, acknowledging his profound influence and the legacy he leaves. Korey “Big Oomp” Roberson, who first signed DJ Unk, described him as a “legendary DJ, rapper, and producer” who was a vital part of their record label.
Although the cause of death remains unknown, DJ Unk’s contributions to music will be celebrated for many years. His lively beats and performances shaped a generation, and his songs continue to touch the hearts of both old and new fans. Even in 2024, artists like GloRilla were sampling his music, a testament to his enduring legacy.
