Tragic End: Liam Payne’s Mental Health Struggles and Warnings from His Psychiatrist

Liam Payne's psychiatrist stopped treating him weeks before his death and warned of what was happening to the singer

Just weeks before the tragic passing of Liam Payne in October, the former One Direction member was advised by his psychiatrist to pursue a greater level of treatment than what she could offer. A letter disclosed in an Argentine court, obtained by TMZ, reveals insights into the singer’s challenges with mental health and addiction prior to his death.

In September 2024, Payne‘s psychiatrist made the tough choice to stop providing care, indicating he required enhanced treatment options. She detailed her decision in the letter, stating it was based on a comprehensive evaluation of his mental health requirements.

The psychiatrist highlighted the necessity of following a structured treatment approach that included adhering to prescribed medication, minimizing alcohol consumption while on medication, and participating in weekly therapy sessions. She also suggested regular check-ups with a primary care physician along with additional medical assessments.

A crucial aspect of her recommendations was for him to work through his “depression and trauma” with a therapist, which she termed as “essential for effective management” of these challenges. To facilitate this transition, she supplied Liam with a list of therapists and rehabilitation facilities that could provide him with the needed support.

In her final comments, she expressed optimism for his healing process.

“Thank you for understanding, and I wish you the best in your ongoing journey toward mental wellness,” she concluded.

Payne’s battles with sobriety

Payne was open about his struggles with addiction and emotional well-being. In July 2023, he marked six months of sobriety after a 100-day rehabilitation period. The singer shared his journey in a moving YouTube message, stating: “I truly don’t need those substances anymore. The celebrations are finished.”

However, despite his determination, Payne faced a relapse the subsequent year, resulting in a heartbreaking series of incidents. On October 19, 2024, the 31-year-old tragically fell from the balcony of his hotel on the third floor in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
