For the first time in eight seasons, Travis Kelce has gone two weeks without a touchdown in an NFL season. Nevertheless, his Kansas City Chiefs are sitting at 2-0, though concerns about the star tight end’s start to the season are beginning to surface.
Prior to this season, Kelce secured a contract extension that positioned him as the highest-paid tight end in the NFL and brought him closer to rivaling the wealth of his famous partner, Taylor Swift. However, following last week’s victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, the NFL could impose a fine on Kelce, with Swift potentially playing a role in this situation.
Is a fine on the horizon?
The NFL unveiled its stance on player celebrations for the 2024 season, penalizing Bengals receiver Andrei Iosivas with a fine exceeding $5,000 for an “archery” celebration during last Sunday’s narrow defeat in Kansas City, which the league deemed “unsportsmanlike“.
Interestingly, Kelce has historically used the same celebration, particularly since starting to date Swift last year. The famed singer-songwriter, who boasts a Grammy and has a song named “The Archer“, has even adopted this gesture during her global Eras Tour.
So far, it seems that Kelce is not facing any fines at this moment. His contract with Kansas City runs through 2027, ensuring a $17 million salary in the current season.
Despite this, the NFL’s decision to penalize Iosivas for the archer celebration might put Kelce on notice as he prepares for the upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons. This provides Kelce with a prime opportunity to end his slow start to the season, but should he score, the 34-year-old will need to consider a more subdued method of celebration.
