DJ Unk, whose real name was Anthony Leonard Platt, sadly passed away on January 24, 2025, due to a cardiac arrest while sleeping, as per his wife, Sherkita Long-Platt. He was renowned for his major hits such as “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,”play a significant role in the Atlanta music scene during the early 2000s.
Long-Platt shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, expressing the family’s deep sorrow. “Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER,” she stated, requesting compassion and privacy during this challenging time.
Honoring the life of a music legend
Big Oomp Records, the label that launched DJ Unk’s career, paid tribute to him, describing him as a “true ATL legend” and commending his impact on the music industry. They noted that his vibrant presence and creativity left a lasting impression worldwide.
“His legacy will inspire artists, DJs, and fans for years,” the label added, underscoring that DJ Unk was pivotal to their label’s success.
A remarkable career with unforgettable tracks
DJ Unk rose to fame with his hits “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” released in 2006, capturing the dynamic essence of Atlanta’s music scene. The track “Walk It Out” further gained popularity with a remix featuring André 3000 and Jim Jones and was featured in the movie Stomp The Yard, solidifying its cultural impact.
In a 2023 interview, DJ Unk reflected on how his music remained relevant. “I’ve noticed people use it in workouts or even in church. It promotes good energy and vibes,” he mentioned.
A reminder of health struggles
DJ Unk had experienced health issues prior, including a heart attack in 2010, which he attributed to stress and an unhealthy lifestyle. At that time, he voiced a desire to prioritize his health, recognizing the strain his career placed on him.
In memory of him, a candlelight vigil will take place on January 26 at Central Park in Atlanta. DJ Unk’s influential contributions to music and culture will be remembered, ensuring his legacy as a hip-hop pioneer endures.
