This article discusses experiences with substance abuse.
Being the child of a music icon may seem privileged, but Elijah Blue Allman has faced profound struggles, including family issues, health challenges, and marital difficulties, all under public scrutiny due to his famous mother, Cher.
Elijah’s early life was marked by the tumultuous breakup of his parents. Cher herself noted in her memoir, “Cher: The Memoir — Part One,” that their marriage was essentially a result of her pregnancy. Their time together was plagued with challenges, particularly concerning Gregg Allman’s substance abuse. Despite attempts at reconciliation, they ultimately divorced after a frightening episode where Gregg experienced a paranoid breakdown. Cher’s emotional turmoil was captured in her 1979 song “My Song (Too Far Gone),” poignantly expressing her heartache over Elijah missing out on knowing his father. While Elijah rarely speaks of the impact of this on his life, he acknowledged in 2014 that he valued the positive influences of Cher’s later partners, noting, “I was lucky to have them in my life because my dad wasn’t around.”
Elijah Blue Allman’s Struggles with Addiction
Unfortunately, distance from his father did not prevent Elijah from facing his own drug problems. In a 2014 ET interview, he revealed that he began experimenting with drugs at a young age, saying, “I started with drugs around the same time that we all did, around 11.” Initially, he used ecstasy and marijuana, but after high school, he turned to heroin to escape his painful past. Elijah candidly mentioned facing perilous situations related to his drug use, stating, “I always kind of kept it a little bit safe but you can never do that.” While he initially cleaned up his act, the pandemic saw him relapse, prompting his mother Cher to take significant steps to help him.
Living with Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a little-known struggle among celebrities, and Elijah Blue Allman is among those affected. He candidly shared that diagnosing his condition took numerous tests and his recovery journey has been arduous. In an effort to heal, he attempted a natural approach that led to severe side effects, describing it as feeling like his life force was draining away. This worrying experience required hospitalization in the ICU for two weeks, highlighting the severe impact of Lyme disease on his well-being.

In 2010, he sought help again at a prestigious German clinic, still battling the lingering symptoms of Lyme disease. Among the treatments he received were stem cell injections and induced fevers, but unfortunately, these remedies did not bring the relief he hoped for. In a candid interview with ET, he remarked that his struggle with Lyme was “much darker” than his previous struggles with addiction. He expressed feelings of skepticism from his mother, Cher, suggesting that while she was supportive, she didn’t fully grasp the severity of his condition.
Eventually, Allman discovered some relief through alternative medicine while residing in Cologne, and during this time, he met his future wife.
