“The Blackening” is a horror-comedy film that follows a group of seven friends who celebrate Juneteenth with a trip to a remote cabin. However, their weekend getaway soon turns into a nightmare when one of their friends is kidnapped by a killer. In a terrifying video, the killer demands that the group sacrifice the Blackest one among them in order to save the rest, which is an offensive and cliché horror-movie trope. The movie stars Dewayne Perkins, Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Antoinette Robertson, and Sinqua Walls, with Jay Pharoah and Yvonne Orji. It is based on a 2018 short film of the same name by comedy sketch group 3Peat. The intent of the movie is to take horror-movie tropes and expand them to force the audience to realize that tropes are also human beings. It will be released in theaters on June 16, 2022.
