BTS’s name has changed over time, just like the group itself. When they debuted in 2013, the name stood for “Bangtan Sonyeondan,” which translates to “Bulletproof Boy Scouts.” J-Hope explained in 2013 on the radio show “Super Junior’s Kiss The Radio” that the name had a deep meaning: “…Bangtan literally means ‘bulletproof.’ So it means we aim to block oppression and discrimination that rain on adolescents like bullets, and we protect their values and ideals.” BTS incorporated the word “bulletproof” into their song titles, album eras, and more. In 2017, BTS and Big Hit Entertainment unveiled a pair of logos and a new definition of the name: Beyond the Scene. Both meanings are still used in promotion and by ARMYs. BTS has also created other unofficial acronyms for their name, such as “Burn The Stage” for their 2018 YouTube series documenting their 2017 worldwide “Wings” tour, and “Bring the Soul” for their 2019 concert film. In 2023, they will debut a new documentary, “Monuments: Beyond the Star,” featuring unseen moments on and off-stage, on Disney+.
