The recent release of Joker: Folie à Deux has caused quite a stir in the film community after experiencing a staggering 81% drop in box office earnings during its second weekend. Given the high hopes stemming from the success of its predecessor, which came out in 2019, this financial performance prompts critical examination of the underlying issues.
With just $7 million earned over the weekend, the movie’s total domestic earnings have reached $51 million, significantly below its estimated $190 million production budget. When compared to other recent disappointing films like The Marvels and Morbius, the collapse of Joker 2 becomes even more evident. Even Halloween Ends, often criticized by audiences, managed to hold on better. This steep decline indicates a broader problem: the film’s quality. Unlike the original Joker, which was acclaimed for its intense portrayal of the titular character, the sequel appears to have fallen short in both critical and audience reception.
Directed by Todd Phillips and featuring Joaquin Phoenix, who reprises his Oscar-winning role, alongside Lady Gaga in her portrayal of Harley Quinn, Joker: Folie à Deux initially seemed poised for success. Yet, with its current domestic total of $51 million and a global haul of $165.3 million, Warner Bros. faces the likelihood of financial losses. The situation worsens when drawing parallels to Beetlejuice 2, which, in its sixth week, matched the weekend figures of Joker 2 in its second week.
As the film may soon move to Video on Demand, it raises the question of whether Joker 2 will find a new audience or be remembered as one of the significant letdowns of 2024.
It’s disappointing to see a film with such great potential struggle so profoundly. The original Joker set a new standard for superhero films, yet the sequel appears to have aimed too high, trying to replicate its predecessor’s magic. As an advocate for innovative cinema, I hope that valuable lessons will be taken from this experience.
