Male actors in Hollywood usually find themselves typecast into roles like Batman’s sidekick or WWII veterans, while older actresses end up in simple comedies. “The Fabulous Four” is no exception, drawing in top talents for a film that falls short, with antics reminiscent of “Book Club” movies and others.
The movie features Susan Sarandon as Lou, Bette Midler as Marilyn, Megan Mullally as Alice, and Sheryl Lee Ralph as Kitty, each playing somewhat clichéd characters. The plot unfolds as Marilyn, staying in Key West, invites her friends to her wedding without inviting Lou, leading to comical misunderstandings and adventures.
The screenplay, overly contrived at times, guides the characters through ridiculous scenarios, from slingshot antics to inadvertent parasailing mishaps. The film boasts numerous producers, with the main cast doing their best to infuse warmth and charisma into underdeveloped roles. Unfortunately, the storyline lacks depth, relying on tired jokes and forced friendships to carry it through.
