About 150 km west of Ha Giang City, the Suoi Thau Plateau (located in Nan Ma Commune, near the border of Xin Man District in Ha Giang and Bac Ha in Lao Cai) has emerged as a favored spot recently, known for its stunning landscapes.
Situated approximately 5 km from Coc Pai Town (within Xin Man District of Ha Giang Province) and perched over 1,200 meters high, Suoi Thau boasts a refreshing climate, making it perfect for travelers looking for a cool escape.
Recently, 31-year-old Dang Doan Sang from Hanoi made a trip to Suoi Thau in late October with a friend, enchanted by its natural beauty. After discovering images online, Sang was inspired to explore Suoi Thau and finally fulfilled his long-held dream of visiting this captivating region on the western rocky plateau.
“The expansive plateau offers unspoiled views. Pine trees stand alongside blooming gardens and lush fields, while a river flows elegantly between two mountain chains, its clear waters creating a breathtaking and poetic scene,” Sang shared.
During Sang’s visit, Suoi Thau was in full bloom, showcasing golden rice and cornfields, along with vibrant buckwheat and cockscomb flowers, painting the landscape with lively colors.
“The plateau consists of several smaller plots, each featuring various plants and flowers tended by different owners,” Sang noted. The local Hmong often intersperse staple crops like corn and rice with flowers that flourish in the region’s soil and climate. These flowers not only provide food but also attract tourists, with an entry fee of 20,000 VND per garden, so it is advisable to carry cash,” he added.
Sang indicated that Suoi Thau’s picturesque scenery is perfect for capturing memorable photographs. The best time for photography and exploration is after 3 p.m. when the sunlight becomes softer.
“For a great experience, check the weather before your trip, aim for clear days, and dress appropriately for unforgettable snapshots,” he suggested.
At present, there are limited facilities at Suoi Thau Plateau, with only a few wooden stalls selling drinks and traditional attire rentals available. As a result, most visitors opt for day trips. Those wishing to stay overnight can find accommodations in Coc Pai Town (Xin Man, Ha Giang), Bac Ha District (Lao Cai), or Ban Phung Village (Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang).
The route from Bac Ha (Lao Cai) to Suoi Thau is picturesque, featuring many winding roads. However, be cautious of small potholes from recent landslides due to Typhoon Yagi. Sang advised, “After reaching Nan Ma Commune, proceed about 5 km towards Xin Man then follow the concrete road to reach the plateau safely.”
Sang managed to see several highlights during his brief two-day, one-night trip. Along with Suoi Thau Plateau, he visited Bac Ha in Lao Cai, marveling at fields adorned with pink grass and blooming buckwheat, while indulging in local specialties like black chicken hotpot, fried stream fish, and red hand-pulled pho.
The total cost of the journey was around 2 million VND per person, which included 680,000 VND for a round-trip sleeper bus fare, 400,000 VND for one night at a Bac Ha homestay, 400,000 VND for meals, 200,000 VND for motorbike rental and fuel, plus minor expenses.
