Between February 12 and 16, southern Son La, Hoa Binh, and the eastern parts of Northern Vietnam will experience light drizzle, fog, and high humidity, especially during early mornings and nights. Cold temperatures will continue, particularly in mountainous regions where severe cold spells may occur.
A significant cold front that moved in on February 7 has resulted in extremely cold conditions and frost across Northern Vietnam, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).
This cold spell is expected to last until February 10, with a gradual rise in temperatures thereafter. There will be light rain and some fog on February 10 and 11, although skies will clear by midday, with cold weather ongoing. Frost and icy conditions might affect high-altitude areas.
From February 11 forward, the cold weather will persist in mountainous areas, with additional cold spells possible.
Starting February 12, regions such as Lao Cai, Yen Bai, southern Son La, Hoa Binh, and the eastern North Vietnam will encounter drizzle and fog along with continued cold temperatures. In contrast, the northwestern region will benefit from sunny and clear days.
Nguyen Van Huong from NCHMF indicated that high humidity and dampness will dominate Northern Vietnam from late February until April, with these humid spells lasting from 3 to 5 days, sometimes up to a week, subsiding only when a northeast monsoon arrives.
This time of February still falls within winter, meaning cold air will linger. However, moist air is expected to replace dry air towards the end of the month, leading to heightened drizzle, fog, and humidity especially in Hanoi.
Humidity levels will remain above 85% from late February through April in Northern Vietnam, causing prolonged moisture in living spaces and everyday items.
Experts caution that excessive humidity can hinder daily activities and worsen respiratory health issues, particularly impacting vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.
High moisture levels can foster allergens and respiratory pathogens, raising the likelihood of allergic reactions and respiratory illnesses.
