Bachelor’s Degree Standards at HUST
A small number of students at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) are yet to receive their bachelor’s degrees due to unmet outcome criteria. The university emphasizes not only technical knowledge but also foreign language proficiency, preparing students for the competitive global job market.
Encouraging English Learning
Bui Hoai Thang from HUST explained that to incentivize students in learning English, the university has established varying standards for each academic year. Students are required to demonstrate their English proficiency before they can undertake their graduation theses, thereby ensuring they graduate once their thesis is complete.
“We offer free English training courses and resources, along with intensive lessons to enhance learning opportunities,” added Thang.
Language Support Services
The language centers at HUST offer a range of activities and English clubs for student engagement. Those facing challenges with foreign languages can access support from the institution, peers, the students’ association, and the youth union.
NEU’s English Proficiency Strategy
At the National Economics University (NEU), Le Anh Duc, deputy head of the training division, noted that the university actively shares information regarding English proficiency standards and regulations for students during enrollment and advisory sessions.
Students without international English certifications must take a placement test upon enrollment to determine their language skill level, which helps guide them to appropriate courses.
“We design intensive English curricula that meet international standards for those who are still working to satisfy these requirements. Personalized advice is also available for students to select suitable training plans,” he stated.
Regular Assessments and Collaborations
NEU conducts English assessments periodically to evaluate students’ language skills and provide timely feedback regarding their capabilities.
“We collaborate with international English organizations to facilitate IELTS exams, ensuring students have the best opportunities available,” he mentioned.
Proactive Measures at HUST
Nguyen Thanh Hung, HUST’s training division head, highlighted that the university employs various strategies to assist students in achieving foreign language proficiency.
“We alert students as courses reach completion and conduct regular assessments to help them identify appropriate English classes, motivating them to enhance their skills before deadlines,” he explained. “Students are restricted from registering for excessive courses until they meet the required language standards, necessitating a stronger commitment to English study.”
Monitoring and Restrictions
HUST sets English benchmarks for distinct academic periods. If students delay their English studies until their final semesters, they are unlikely to meet the expected outcomes.
All relevant student data, including semester duration, earned credits, and language proficiency, is accessible via the school’s information system, allowing the training division to notify students about their English skill evaluations.
Limiting the number of courses available for registration is effective in ensuring students achieve the required English level necessary for progressing in their studies.
A Supportive Learning Environment
Furthermore, HUST fosters an immersive English learning environment. The university has been successful in attracting increasing numbers of international students and hiring foreign lecturers. The Youth Union and students’ association organize English clubs, while the foreign language center aids students struggling with English or seeking improvement.
University of Trade’s Approach
The University of Trade emphasizes consistent encouragement for students to develop their English skills to meet academic standards. The institution has established a professional training center linked with an English center to provide evening classes for students. These affiliated centers offer preferential fees for students, easing the financial burden associated with language improvement.
