Man Offers Free Shoe Repair Service to Show Gratitude to ‘Second Family’

Owing debt of gratitude to 'second family', man offers free shoe repair service

Instead of selling products, Duong provides free shoe repair services for his customers.

In 2016, Duong started offering free shoe repairs alongside his shoe shop that also sold footwear and provided warranties.

Recognizing the demand for shoe repair services in the community, he began offering free repairs by displaying a sign at his shop entrance.

Initially, people were skeptical of his intentions, suspecting it was a ploy for more business. However, this changed when they saw his genuine commitment to helping those in need.

Over time, his reputation grew, attracting both low-income individuals seeking free repairs and high-income clients offering payment for his services.

To accommodate those wanting to pay, Duong set up a donation box where clients could contribute any amount they wished, with the proceeds used to help the less fortunate.

Despite initial doubts, people eventually supported Duong’s altruistic endeavors, spreading word of his work to others.

Following the challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, Duong downsized his business and relocated to a smaller space in an alley.

Despite facing hardships and considering giving up, Duong remained steadfast in his commitment to repairing shoes for those in need.

His motivation stems from repaying the kindness shown to him in his youth and wanting to assist others facing hardships.

Having been raised in poverty and later taken in by a generous family who taught him the art of shoemaking and repairing, Duong feels indebted to them.

Grateful for the support and education provided by his “second family,” Duong learned the trade and eventually opened his own shop.

Out of respect for his benefactors, Duong embraced his career in shoemaking to honor their legacy and support the craft that transformed his life.

Reflecting on his past struggles and the unwavering support he received, Duong remains dedicated to helping others, regardless of their financial status.
