Cold Weather Approaching Northern Vietnam
Northern Vietnam is bracing for a drop in temperature, with Hanoi forecasted to experience chills as low as 13°C and mountainous regions dipping below 10°C during the New Year festivities.
The Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center reports that the current spell of cold air will lose some intensity before picking up strength again from December 31 to January 2, 2025.
The national meteorological agency indicates that the northern regions of Vietnam, including Thanh Hoa, will have dry, sunny days but cold nights ahead.
Starting in the evening of December 30, light rainfall is anticipated in some areas, with a significant drop in temperatures expected, particularly in the mountains where severe cold spells could occur.
From December 31 to January 3, the weak cold air will initially gain strength, followed by more robust cold fronts.
Despite the cold air systems moving through, the weather is predicted to remain mainly dry, with daytime temperatures in the northern regions lying between 20°–24°C.
At night, temperatures may fall notably, with mountainous locales potentially dropping to around 10°C.
Regional Weather Forecasts
In the Northern and North Central regions, expect isolated light rain, with some morning fog and sunny afternoons. Nighttime temperatures are forecasted between 10°–13°C in the mountains and 13°–16°C in the plains, while daytime readings will be around 22°–25°C.
In Hanoi, mornings may start with fog, followed by sunny conditions with daytime highs reaching 23°–25°C and nighttime lows between 13°–15°C.
The Central and South Central areas are likely to see scattered showers and thunderstorms from December 31 to January 5, with heavier rain in some spots. Additionally, the northern sections will experience cooler temperatures.
For the Central Highlands and Southern regions, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected, especially between January 2 and 4, with possible whirlwinds, lightning, and strong gusts accompanying thunderstorms.
New Year Weather Outlook
The overall weather outlook for the New Year holiday across the country is as follows:
Northern Vietnam: Expect dry and cold conditions with sunny days and chilly evenings.
Central regions: Rain is likely in various areas, particularly from December 31 onwards.
Southern Vietnam: Occasional showers and thunderstorms may occur, mainly during afternoon hours.
