A report from the National Traffic Safety Committee reveals a significant increase in railway accidents over the past seven months, ranking second only to road traffic incidents.
July witnessed 18 railway accidents across the country, resulting in 12 fatalities and 7 injuries. This marks a rise of 9 incidents, 5 deaths, and 4 injuries compared to the same period last year.
The latest incident occurred on July 28 around 8:47 PM when train SNT5, driven by engineer D.H.H., collided with a pickup truck at a crossing in Bien Hoa City. The collision tragically led to the deaths of two individuals.
The Vietnam Railway Authority reported a total of 106 railway accidents in the first seven months of 2024, causing 43 deaths and 61 injuries, with varying levels of severity.
Of these accidents, 49 took place at unofficial crossings, highlighting the risks associated with such locations.
“The primary cause of railway accidents is the negligence of road users when crossing railways. Additionally, incidents involve deliberate actions such as attempting to cross tracks or standing on railway lines,” stated a representative from the Vietnam Railway Authority.
Following the July 28 accident, the Traffic Police Department has called for increased monitoring and strict enforcement of regulations to prevent railway accidents.
