Celebration of UN Day of Vesak in Ho Chi Minh City

The 2025 UN Day of Vesak in Ho Chi Minh City features the veneration of important Buddhist relics, including those from India, at Thanh Tam Pagoda. Additionally, the immortal heart relic of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc is enshrined at Vietnam Quoc Tu Pagoda.

Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc famously self-immolated on June 11, 1963, in protest against the oppressive regime of Ngo Dinh Diem, an act that became a pivotal moment in Vietnam’s history.

A resolution from the Supreme Patriarchal Council expresses that the flame and heart of Thich Quang Duc symbolize unparalleled compassion and spiritual depth, transcending earthly limitations.

The Fourth Supreme Patriarch of Vietnamese Buddhism, Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, emphasized national pride in Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc’s legacy, stating that his sacrifice serves both spiritual and national causes.

He conveyed that Thich Quang Duc’s heart and flame illuminate human understanding, encouraging the dissolution of hatred and the exclusion of selfishness.

The late Venerable Thich Tri Quang noted that the significant moment of Thich Quang Duc’s self-immolation reverberated worldwide, notably impacting the perception of the Diem regime almost instantly.

Most Venerable Thich Duc Nghiep recounted the scene, describing the shock and sorrow that engulfed witnesses. He revealed that measures were taken to block fire trucks from disrupting the tragic event.

After approximately 30 minutes, the remains of Thich Quang Duc were transported back to Xa Loi Pagoda, where a wave of mourners came to pay respect, marking the event’s historical broadcast around the world.

This dramatic act compelled the Diem government to respond, eventually leading to discussions with religious leaders.

Professor Le Manh That emphasized the importance of studying Thich Quang Duc’s self-immolation from various perspectives to impart its meaning to future generations, showcasing its unifying essence for the Dharma and the nation.

In his book, The Torch of Quang Duc, the Most Venerable Thich Duc Nhuan described the flames of Quang Duc as a beacon of hope during tumultuous times, unblemished by personal despair.

Thich Quang Duc remains a monumental historical figure in both Buddhism and Vietnam, his self-immolation resonating deeply within the global community.

His act was not just a protest but a profound call for religious freedom, unity, and peace during a period marked by turmoil.

The self-immolation of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc continues to inspire millions, heralded as an enduring testament of compassion and moral bravery throughout history: “For a thousand years, the heart of the Bodhisattva will live on.”
