Vietnam has successfully adopted IPv6, reaching a rate of 65.5%, which places it 7th globally and reflects a two-position increase since the close of 2023. This development highlights the country’s swift advancement in its Internet infrastructure.
On January 24, the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), operating under the Ministry of Information and Communications, unveiled the 2024 Vietnam Internet and Internet Resources Report.
The report, titled “Safe and Sustainable Internet Infrastructure for Emerging Technologies Development,” offers insights into Vietnam’s Internet ecosystem, serving as a resource for professionals, organizations, and businesses to strategize for future advancements.
Nguyen Hong Thang, the Director of VNNIC, praised Vietnam’s significant progress since its first Internet connection in 1997, which started with a single network. Currently, there are 1,148 independent networks integrated via IP and ASN frameworks.
The Internet’s infrastructure has been fortified with direct peering links, multi-directional load-sharing systems, and connections to essential Internet exchanges, including Vietnam’s National Internet Exchange (VNIX). These improvements guarantee stable and robust connectivity throughout the nation.
In recent years, Vietnam has enhanced its Internet capabilities in terms of infrastructure, speed, security, and user accessibility, making it a vital aspect of society and a key driver of the country’s digital transformation and industrialization objectives.
Vietnam stands out globally for its transition to IPv6, with an adoption rate of 65.5% as of November 2024, which is 1.6 times above the global average. Within ASEAN, Vietnam holds the 2nd position and ranks among the top 7 countries worldwide, improving its position by two places since 2023.
The year 2024 also marks three decades since the establishment of Vietnam’s national domain name “.vn,” which represents the nation’s sovereignty in cyberspace.
As of November 2024, more than 630,000 “.vn” domain names have been registered, placing Vietnam 2nd in ASEAN, 10th in the Asia-Pacific, and 40th globally, an increase of six spots since 2020.
The core Internet infrastructure boasts a Service Level Agreement (SLA) efficiency of over 99.99%, with 845 out of 1,148 VNNIC’s IP members engaged in ROA/RPKI digital resource signing.
This extensive adoption of Internet resource signature technology has resulted in a 73% decrease in routing security issues in 2024.
The development of domestic DNS ROOT systems has markedly enhanced domain name query efficiency, improving speed by five-fold.
Vietnam is gearing up for a full transition to IPv6, in line with technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and 5G/6G advancements.
VNNIC has crafted a roadmap to eliminate IPv4 by 2032, with anticipated IPv6 adoption rates of 70% by 2025; 80% by 2028; 90% by 2030; and full adoption by 2032, at which point IPv4 will be fully retired.
This shift to IPv6 is critical for the development of next-generation Internet services, especially in the realms of IoT and industrial Internet applications.
VNNIC stated that transitioning to IPv6-only networks will spur technological advancements and generate significant value while methodically phasing out IPv4 in line with global trends.
To promote the national domain name “.vn” during the digital transformation journey, VNNIC is targeting at least 1 million “.vn” domain registrations by the end of 2025.
