A report by the Vietnam Information Security Association (VNISA) highlighted the outstanding performance of Vietnamese students in the 2024 ASEAN Cybersecurity Skills Competition, hosted by the ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Capacity Building Centre.
The competition, held online on July 25 in collaboration with Thailand’s National Cyber Security Agency, allowed each ASEAN member country to send up to 30 participants under 26 years old. VNISA and the Information Security Authority, with the Ministry of Information and Communications’ approval, selected 30 students from eight universities in Vietnam to represent the country.
Participating alongside over 200 cybersecurity enthusiasts from nine other ASEAN nations, the Vietnamese students tackled various online challenges in Network, Crypto, Reverse Engineering, Programming, Miscellaneous, and Puzzle categories.
The final results were impressive, with Vietnamese students achieving remarkable scores. Notably, seven out of the top ten positions were secured by Vietnamese participants.
The top two spots were claimed by Nguyen Hoang Huy and Dinh Thai Son from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, followed by students from FPT University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. All top 10 contestants received accolades from the ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Capacity Building Centre.
Nguyen Hoang Huy and Dinh Thai Son, who clinched the top positions, belong to the Nu_RobinHust team from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, renowned for their prior successes in regional cybersecurity competitions.
The 30 participants for the ASEAN 2024 Cybersecurity Skills Competition were selected by VNISA and the Information Security Authority based on their performance in the final round of the ASEAN 2023 Student Information Security Contest.
The achievements of Vietnamese students in the competition underscore the nation’s strong information security talent pool and the effectiveness of initiatives like the ASEAN Student Information Security Contest, which VNISA has been organizing since 2008 and expanded to include ASEAN students in 2019.
Exceptional Vietnamese teams from these events often go on to represent the country in regional and international cybersecurity competitions, consistently winning top honors, such as at the ASEAN Cyber Shield and Cyber SEA Game.
The upcoming ASEAN 2024 Student Information Security Contest will feature preliminary and final rounds, scheduled to be held online on October 5 and October 19, respectively.
