Woman Arrested for Theft from Foreign Boyfriend
A woman who embezzled more than 500 million Vietnamese dong (around $21,000) from her foreign partner has been caught by authorities while attempting to escape.
On December 31, the Criminal Police Investigation Department of Binh Chanh District in Ho Chi Minh City took 43-year-old Ha Thi Anh Nguyet, from Quang Ninh, into custody for further inquiry. The case is set to be handed over to the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department to face theft charges.
On December 27, an Australian citizen, Mr. N., who is 63 years old, reported to local police about his robbery.
The stolen items included cash, gold jewelry, and a phone, totaling over VND 500 million (approximately USD 21,000).
Mr. N. suspected Nguyet, a new acquaintance, of being the thief.
Following his complaint, the Binh Chanh District Police promptly initiated an investigation, gathering evidence from the scene, interviewing witnesses, and identifying Nguyet as the main suspect.
At that point, Nguyet had already fled north.
Law enforcement tracked her movements and was able to capture her successfully.
During questioning, Nguyet confessed to taking advantage of Mr. N.’s trust to steal his belongings and then flee. She disclosed that she had sold some of the stolen items and put the money into her bank account.
To avoid getting caught, Nguyet frequently changed vehicles while making her getaway to the north.
The recovered items have been returned to Mr. N. by the police of Binh Chanh District.
