During the three-hour spectacle of the 2016 American Music Awards, there was no way the cameras could catch absolutely everything. In addition to the star-studded telecast, a lot happened outside the Microsoft Theatre in downtown L.A. over the course of Sunday night (Nov. 20), from the red carpet leading up to the show to all the action in the press tent and beyond.
Below, we gathered up some moments you might have missed if you just watched at home:
4:07 p.m.: Idina Menzel stops to chat with Billboard on the red carpet about the Hamilton cast making a statement to vice president-elect Mike Pence and Donald Trump’s outcry afterward. “I think they were extremely courageous, 100 percent appropriate,” she says of her Broadway peers. “The theater is not just about about being a safe place, but it’s about being thought-provoking, educating yourself, empathy, learning to step in other people’s shoes, stories and existence. If you’re not prepared to do that, you need to open your heart.”
4:24 p.m.: Shawn Mendes chats with
Billboard on the carpet about scoring his second No. 1 album on the
Billboard 200 chart.
4:51 p.m.: John Legend walks over to
Tim McGraw to say hi and is introduced to Tim’s daughter Maggie on the red carpet.

mini-beef with Lady Gaga on Twitter last month while chatting with press backstage. “I haven’t seen her, but I’d say ‘what’s up,'” Alex Pall says with a laugh, with Drew Taggart adding: “I think we’re cool. I think we resolved it on Twitter.”
7:24 p.m.: After winning favorite duo/group – country,
Florida Georgia Linereveal their next single backstage. “We’re shooting a music video in early January with some good friends of ours. About five of them,” Brian Kelly teased, before Tyler Hubbard filled in the blanks: “‘God, Your Mama, and Me.’ Blessed to put that out.
