The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) has detained a 30-year-old individual named Lekan Olanrewaju, accused of vandalizing an electronic road sign located on the Five Star Bridge, Oshodi.
According to a statement from the Lagos State Police Command shared on X, Olanrewaju was caught attempting to disconnect the battery cables from the road sign during the early hours of Wednesday, November 13.
“RRS operatives apprehended a man last Wednesday for damaging one of the electronic road signs on the Five Star Bridge, which serves as a warning for drivers to reduce their speed,” the announcement noted.
“Lekan Olanrewaju, aged 30, was arrested at approximately 2:00 a.m. as he worked on the electronic signage.”
“Just a week prior, vandals had stolen the battery from one of the two electronic signs aimed at advising motorists at the inward Apapa section of the bridge.”
The police indicated that Olanrewaju’s arrest was a result of an initiative spearheaded by RRS Commander Shola Jejeloye, who had deployed a patrol squad to address theft-related issues and protect public assets.
Law enforcement officials recovered tools including cables and pliers from him, and he has since been convicted and sentenced to one and a half years in imprisonment.
