Dr. Musa Aliyu, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), disclosed that his organization recovered approximately N4 billion in stolen public funds in just 24 hours.
He also announced plans to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance efforts in combating corruption.
During a forum held in Abuja on Thursday, Aliyu emphasized the significant role technology can play in ensuring accountability and effective governance.
He noted, “Today, I want to focus on the advantages that technological advancements can bring to our fight against corruption. Technology has the potential to create unbiased solutions to our issues, provided we use it effectively.”
Aliyu remarked on the concerning amount of public funds being mismanaged, highlighting that certain individuals have accumulated billions unlawfully.
“It’s deeply troubling that some people are hoarding public wealth instead of channeling it towards national development,” he expressed.
He conveyed that the ICPC is committed to employing technology and management strategies to rebuild trust in their anti-corruption mission, stressing the importance of transparency in their initiatives.
Acknowledging systemic issues in public expenditure, Aliyu advocated for investments in technologies that can minimize corruption in procurement processes.
“Adopting technology-driven procedures can help eliminate practices like inflating contract prices,” he stated, suggesting that solutions such as blockchain could enhance the integrity of public transactions.
“Data analytics are vital since current datasets are often outdated or incorrect, leading to inefficiency,” he added.
Aliyu emphasized the necessity of introducing preventive measures against corruption, underscoring the value of social integrity and community education.
“Public awareness is crucial; informed citizens can hold their leaders accountable,” he asserted.
He advocated for a focus on developing resilient systems that respect human dignity and foster ethical governance, noting the importance of establishing a culture that discourages misconduct.
Aliyu also urged the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Whistle Blowing Act, stressing the need to protect whistleblowers in the fight against corruption.
Mr. Muhuyi Magaji, who leads the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission, echoed the sentiment that combatting corruption requires collective effort from all citizens.
“When people unite against corruption, we increase our chances of success. It’s not solely the responsibility of the government,” Magaji stated.
Mr. Demola Bakare, Acting Director of Public Enlightenment and Education at ICPC, called on forum participants to pursue the fight against corruption earnestly and with knowledge of the regulatory framework.
He likened the anti-corruption effort to a marathon, emphasizing the need for persistence and dedication.
Bakare reaffirmed the anti-graft agency’s commitment to supporting all stakeholders in the national battle against corruption.
