An individual from Nigeria shares the story of her broken engagement from four years ago, revealing that it ended because of a statement she made online regarding her reluctance to have her mother-in-law live with them after marriage.
The woman explained that her former fiancé took issue with her comment and decided to call off their engagement. Subsequently, he went on to marry someone else, but their marriage only lasted 8 months.
In a Facebook post on August 6, the woman expressed, “Today marks exactly 4 years since my ex-fiancé ended our engagement because of my stance on not wanting my mother-in-law to reside with us in our future home post-marriage. He was displeased with my viewpoint and thus, called off our engagement,”.
She continued, “Initially, I felt sadness and regret for my remark, but after two days, I ceased regretting it as I realized it was my truth and choice. Even now, my opinion remains unchanged. Ironically, even my biological mother would not live with us in our marital home. I prefer to provide housing for them elsewhere and maintain our privacy and space. I am willing to offer support and care through alternate means but residing with us is non-negotiable. Exceptions can be made for health reasons. It’s essential for couples to discuss such preferences before engagement. Our choices are valid; marry those who share your ideals,”.
The woman also mentioned that her ex-fiancé attempted to reconcile, but she declined his advances.
