Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens gets an early season 2 renewal at Comedy Central

Comedy Central has officially renewed its upcoming comedy series Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens for a second season. The renewal announcement comes ahead of the half-hour long sitcom’s debut next week which will be led by Awkwafina, who has recently won her first Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her incredible performance in Lulu Wang’s The Farewell.

“We are in awe of Awkwafina’s creative genius on every level and we could not be more excited to embark on a season two with the entire Lin family in Awkwafina is Nora From Queens.” Co-Heads of Original content Sarah Babineau and Jonas Larsen said in a joint statement (via Deadline).

Loosely based on Awkwafina’s real-life experiences, Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens will follow the story of a young woman named Nora Lum, who is growing up in Flushing. Raised by her Dad and Grandma (Lori Tan Chinn) alongside her cousin, Nora leans on her family as she navigates life and young adulthood in outer borough-NYC.

Also starring in the series are Bowen Yang as Nora’s more successful cousin, BD Wong as her father, Lori Tan Chinn as her grandmother and Agents of SHIELD actress Ming-Na Wen to guest star as Nora’s aunt Sandra. The pilot was directed by Lucia Aniello. The lineup of the directors that are set to helm episodes includes Emmy nominee Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), Lucia Aniello (Broad City), Jamie Babbit (But I’m a Cheerleader), The Daniels (Swiss Army Man), Steven Tsuchida (Younger) and Anu Valia (The Other Two).

Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s 8, The Farewell) will star in and executive produce the 10-episode series, and also co-wrote the pilot with Karey Dornetto and Teresa Hsiao. Executive producing alongside Awkwafina are Dornetto, Aniello, Peter Principato, and Itay Reiss of Artists First. Hsiao is co-executive producing with Monika Zielinska, Adam Londy, and Rachel Olson serving as executives in charge for Comedy Central.

The series will make its debut on January 22 at 10:30 PM on Comedy Central.
