‘Black Widow’ Star Scarlett Johansson Talks Her Sister-Like Relationship With Marvel Co-Star Florence Pugh

We often hear about co-stars who fell in love on set, but sometimes a tale of a new friendship formed through these close quarters can be just as touching. Stars spend a lot of high-pressure time in the spotlight, so it’s important for them to have friends who can understand the demands of the career.

It’s even better when more experienced stars are willing to mentor newcomers in order to help them navigate the tricky world of Hollywood. This seems to be exactly what has happened for co-stars Scarlett Johansson and rising star Florence Pugh

Scarlett Johansson is a seasoned star

Johansson has been well acquainted with the ups and downs of Hollywood. She began acting way back in 1994 when she was only a child.

It was her 2001 role in Ghost World, however, that really rocketed her to stardom. Since then, she has taken on a host of eclectic roles ranging from the serious Girl with a Pearl Earring to fun films like The Nanny Diaries. She even did voice work for The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie and Robot Chicken.

Lately, she’s been drawing attention for her portrayal of Black Widow in several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). She’s also impressed fans with the quirky and critically-acclaimed Jojo Rabbit

In addition to having plenty of experience in the world of film, Johansson has also had to navigate her fair share of tabloids following her personal life. With more than a few famous beaus over the years, Johansson could offer a lot of advice to someone just coming onto the Hollywood scene.

Pugh is a relative newcomer to the acting world. She first appeared in the 2014 film The Falling. It has only been in the past two years that she’s really picked up mainstream attention, but she is definitely soaring in popularity now.

In 2019, she had back-to-back successes with the creepy horror flick Midsommar and the fan-favorite update to Little Women

She worked alongside Johansson for the film Black Widow, which was set to premiere in spring 2020 but has been postponed due to the pandemic. Fans will likely have to wait until the fall to take in this much-anticipated film, but we have some glimpses of the pair working together in the meantime.

While the teaser for the film has the pair — who portray sisters — battling intensely, the actual camaraderie on the set was much more pleasant.

Scarlett Johansson sees Florence Pugh as a little sister

While they portray sisters locked into dramatic turmoil on-screen, Johansson and Pugh managed to forge a real-life sisterly bond during their work together. A story for Elle takes a closer look at Pugh’s meteoric rise to fame, and it includes some glimpses of this delightful friendship.

Johansson said that working with Pugh was like finding the little sister she never had: “I don’t have a little sister. But with Florence, it feels to me like there’s some elements of big sister little sister.”

Johansson also has a lot of respect for Pugh and the way that she carries herself at such a young age.

“I wish I was as confident as she is when I was her age,” Johansson explained. “She’s body confident and has a lot of self-respect. She reminded me – just by listening to her talk about relationships with friends, family or her partner – how important it is to have confidence in your beliefs and desires.”

This confidence has already helped Pugh fend off hate from critics about her relationship with fellow actor Zach Braff — a man who is two decades older than her. Still, even the most confident people need true friends in their corner, and it’s great to know that Pugh and Johansson bonded so well.
