Borno State’s 2025 Budget: High Fuel Spending Amid Challenges
A recent analysis of Borno State’s approved budget for 2025 by SaharaReporters highlights a significant allocation of N1 billion dedicated to fuel for generators in the Government House.
This translates to about N83.3 million monthly, or roughly N2.7 million each day, based on a 30-day period.
Assuming the cost of fuel is N1,000 per litre, this budget suggests a daily usage of approximately 2,777 litres.
Moreover, the budget includes N2 billion for the procurement of new “Power Generating Sets” and N800 million for the fueling of government vehicles in the coming year.
Further analysis shows allocations of N400 million for meals and refreshments, with another N500 million designated for honorariums and allowances for meetings.
There is also N400 million set aside for motor vehicles used by the Government House.
The state plans to invest N400 million in office furniture and equipment, with an additional N50 million for kitchen and canteen supplies.
The Office of the Secretary to the State Government has budgeted N1 billion for office furniture in 2025, as part of a broader budget that includes N2 billion for generators and N1 billion for fuel, despite the challenges posed by severe poverty affecting over 900,000 residents.
Currently, 48% of children in Borno lack educational opportunities, and 47% do not have proper sanitation facilities.
The region is still facing a high level of insecurity, causing loss of life and property, which has raised concerns from Governor Babagana Zulum regarding the state’s shrinking revenue.
