Former President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his congratulations to General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Military Head of State, as he approaches his 90th birthday.
In a statement released on Friday by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari praised Gowon for his visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to national unity and development.
Buhari acknowledged Gowon’s significant role in Nigeria’s history, saying, “We recognize his essential contributions to maintaining our nation’s unity and progress.”
He added, “We pay tribute today to an esteemed statesman and soldier, who exemplified the characteristics of an effective military leader.”
Buhari noted that both older and younger Nigerians continue to admire Gowon and honor the courage of the soldiers he commanded during crucial moments in the country’s past.
“I pay respects to all who served and sacrificed for our nation. Gowon and his team will remain a source of inspiration for future generations,” he stated.
Furthermore, he recognized Gowon’s bravery and his proactive initiatives for Nigeria’s welfare, including establishing the National Youth Service Corps program.
Buhari also expressed gratitude for Gowon’s ongoing dedication to the country, particularly through his initiative called ‘Nigeria Prays’.
Gowon will celebrate his 90th birthday on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
