Charlize Theron is currently starring in Bombshell, the new movie that tells the story of Fox News women who tried to expose Roger Ailes’ sexual misconduct. In the film, Theron plays Megyn Kelly, who claimed in her memoir that Ailes tried to make many advances at her.
Although Theron was not personally involved in the real-life scandal concerning Ailes, she herself has had experiences with predatory men in the entertainment business. She recently opened up about the controversial Harvey Weinstein and shared that he tried to spread a nasty rumor about her around Hollywood.
Charlize Theron said Harvey Weinstein told people he slept with her
In an interview with The New York Times, Theron related Bombshell to Weinstein’s sexual harassment scandal. She acknowledged that a common theme in both cases was Ailes’ and Weinstein’s abilities to marginalize women in order to maintain their own power.
“He was really, really good at [pitting women against each other],” Theron said of Weinstein. “There was a lot of, like, “Well, I’m talking to Gwyneth for this movie …”
Theron added: “One of his lines was that Renée [Zellweger] and I slept with him to get jobs. There was no limit to him. Even in the sexual favors, he would still pit us against each other.”
Harvey Weinstein denied Charlize Theron’s claims
Weinstein responded to Theron’s claims via a spokesperson and denied what the actress said. According to The New York Times, Weinstein commented:
“Charlize Theron is a good actor who helps make films great and marketable. And that is the sole reason that I hired her for terrific projects as ‘The Cider House Rules’ and ‘The Yards.’ She and I always got along well, and I am frankly surprised but expected, being that this is to promote this film and her role in this era.”
In a lawsuit that was filed against Weinstein in December 2017, the plaintiffs mentioned that Weinstein told aspiring actresses he received sexual favors from the likes of Theron, Renee Zellweger, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
At the time, a spokesperson for Weinstein told People: “Mr. Weinstein vehemently denies these accusations and has never stated he slept with any of them. It’s ridiculous that anyone would believe these talented women, academy award winners, provided sexual favors in exchange for roles they earned based on their talent and brilliant work. It’s simply not true..”
Harvey Weinstein denied all allegations of non-consensual sex against him
In 2017, Weinstein became the subject of attention everywhere when The New York Times and The New Yorker published reports detailing accusations against him by various women in Hollywood. These reports shared that, over the past three decades, Weinstein had been engaging in the rape, sexual abuse, and sexual assault of over 80 women. In many cases, Weinstein — who was a well-known Hollywood executive — claimed that he could help further people’s careers if they had sex with him.
There were some famous faces among the women who came forward against Weinstein, including Rose McGowan, Ashley Judd, Cara Delevingne, Lupita Nyong’o, Salma Hayek, and Uma Thurman.
In response to these accusations, Weinstein shared an apology, saying: “I appreciate the way I’ve behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it. Though I’m trying to do better, I know I have a long way to go.”
However, Weinstein has always denied that he engaged in “any non-consensual sex.”
In any case, the Weinstein scandal has been credited with sparking a huge movement worldwide. It started conversations about sexual harassment in various industries and became the inspiration for the #MeToo campaigns in many countries around the world.
