Cholera Outbreak Strikes Kirikiri Prison

Cholera Outbreak Hits Kirikiri Prison

Following a cholera outbreak in the state, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, provided updates on the situation at Kirikiri Medium Security Prison. Immediate medical and environmental interventions were successfully implemented.

An outbreak of severe gastroenteritis, attributed to cholera, has been reported at Kirikiri Medium Security Prison in Lagos State.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, shared that urgent measures such as providing intravenous fluids and health consumables were taken successfully at the prison. In addition, the World Health Organisation (WHO) donated 10,000 doses of pharmaceuticals to support prevention strategies for inmates. Corrections have been made to water and sanitation issues with inspections ongoing at correctional facilities in the state.

Tracing the outbreak back two weeks, Abayomi linked it to unregulated street beverages and contaminated water supply. Samples from street beverages purchased in affected areas tested positive for vibrio cholera bacteria, the cholera-causing agent. The lack of NAFDAC accreditation on the containers indicates informal production units. Efforts are being made to locate and shut down these unregulated production sites.
