Clueless fans, your time has come.
With hundreds of movies hitting theaters every year, it’s shocking how many of those releases remain lost to time. Only a select few manage to stand the test of time, fostering fan bases for decades thereafter. Even fewer films remain pop culture touchstones, with quotable lines and scenes people still regularly reference.
In today’s nostalgia-driven culture, everything old is new again. Countless stories are being retold and revisited, to varying degrees of success. And the studios behind some of those aforementioned classics leverage their continued relevance through anniversary releases. In particular, 2020 will be a great year for fans of movies released in 1995.
‘Clueless’ is coming back to theaters
Throughout 2020, Fathom Events has several of the biggest films of 1995 heading to select theaters. But recently, the company added a new film to the schedule: Clueless.
The 1995 teen comedy from writer/director Amy Heckerling was one of the year’s biggest hits. With a cast of virtual unknowns led by Alicia Silverstone, no one saw the phenomenon of Clueless coming. But it sure has endured. The film is still one of the most popular teen comedies of all time. In fact, it’s often cited as one of the best 1990s comedies in general.
The legacy of Clueless has continued since its release. The movie — loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma — led to a TV series, a stage musical, and assorted other media. CBS has a new drama series in the works, and Paramount announced a remake, a blasphemous notion to longtime fans. At least Clueless purists can see the film in select theaters on May 3, 4, and 6.

Other 1995 movies are returning too
But Heckerling’s comedy isn’t the only 1995 release on the Fathom Events slate. The company is also dusting off Best Picture winner Braveheart for a two-night run in select theaters. The historical epic — directed by and starring Mel Gibson — returns to the big screen on March 22 and 23.
Meanwhile, another Oscar contender follows suit just a couple of weeks later. Director Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 arrives on April 5, 6, and 8. The real-life story of the titular 1970 spacecraft launch stars Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, and Ed Harris. With a domestic total of $172 million, Apollo 13 was the year’s second highest-grossing film after Batman Forever.
Lastly, Babe — director Chris Noonan’s Oscar-winning comedy-drama about a precocious pig — comes out on August 9 and 12. Surprisingly, the film earned a ton of awards attention following its release, even scooping up the Best Visual Effects Oscar.

Fathom Events celebrates other anniversaries
Considering that Clueless was only recently announced, Fathom Events could very well add more classic releases to the schedule. After all, there’s a lot of 2020 still left to cover. But even if the company doesn’t secure the likes of Die Hard with a Vengeance, GoldenEye, Casper, or Crimson Tide, cinephiles still have a lot of options.
For instance, Gladiator celebrates its 20th anniversary with three nights in April. Airplane!, The Shining, and The Blues Brothers mark their 40th anniversaries with Fathom Events runs in May and June. And Ghost turns 30 with a two-night run in July. Even Alfred Hitchcock’s immortal Psycho heads to theaters in October as part of its 60th anniversary.
Truly, Fathom Events already has a lot to offer moviegoers. We’ll keep an eye out to see what else pops up this year. But for now, we’ll bet an entire generation of fans is ready to see Clueless on the big screen for the first time in ages. Or, perhaps, for the first time ever. As if.
