Courtney Love is looking back at her wedding to Kurt Cobain, who she married 28 years ago in a beach ceremony in Hawaii. She opened up on Instagram about that memorable day, sharing a touching tribute to the late Nirvana frontman, who died in 1994.
Courtney Love calls Kurt Cobain an ‘angel’
The Hole frontwoman and the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” singer tied the knot on Feb. 24, 1992, on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu.
“I recall feeling deeply delighted, dizzy, so in love, and knowing how lucky I was,” Love wrote in the caption that accompanied a photo of the smiling pair on their wedding day. “This man was an angel. I thank him for looking out for me.”
Unfortunately, Love and Cobain’s time together was brief. She gave birth to their only child, a daughter named Frances Bean Cobain, in August 1992. On April 8, 1994, Cobain died by suicide at the couple’s Seattle home.
Love reflects on the ‘torturous’ challenges she faced after Cobain’s death
Love’s life has gone through a number of ups and downs since Cobain’s death, as she acknowledged in her post.
“Many parts of the last 28 years have been torturous, chaotic and uphill and in public,” she wrote. “That is the darkest sh*t imaginable,” she added, noting that “it almost tapped my resilience, almost.”
Over the years, Love’s band has released critically acclaimed albums (and been nominated for three Grammy Awards) and she has found success as an actress in movies like The People vs. Larry Flynt and TV shows like Sons of Anarchy. But she’s also faced numerous personal challenges. Love’s long-time drug use was no secret, and she ended up in involuntary confinement at Bellevue in 2004 after she attempted suicide. She’s also struggled financially, had to get a restraining order against her ex-manager, and been hit with multiple libel lawsuits.
Love says her memories of Cobain have helped her through the years
“I had this intensely f*cked up childhood: my mother abandoned me when I was a teenager. I lived through my husband’s suicide. There was a period when drugs completely took over my life,” Love told The Fix in 2011. “There’s no denying that I’ve done a lot of dumb things. I’ve been wasted and written emails and texts that were really hurtful to a lot of people.” But, she added, she was now sober.
On Instagram, she said her memories of Cobain helped her get through the difficult times.
“Between Kurt’s strange amazing divinity, and the honor of a few true friends, the gift of desperation, and sobriety …. I’m here now. It’ll be ok,” she wrote. “I see him on the shore. Rocking in the free world. My husband.”
