Customs Officer Collapses and Passes Away During Parliamentary Inquiry

An officer from the Nigeria Customs Service tragically collapsed and died while participating in a session with the Public Account Committee of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

The unfortunate incident took place at 1:00 pm at the National Assembly while the officer was actively involved in discussions with the committee. He suddenly experienced health issues that rapidly worsened, leading to his collapse during the proceedings.

Immediate aid was provided by the first responders present at the scene to assist the officer. He was promptly taken to the National Assembly Clinic, where medical staff made urgent efforts to intervene.

Despite their best endeavors, the officer was, unfortunately, pronounced dead.

Akin Rotimi, the House’s spokesperson, addressed the occurrence but refrained from revealing the name of the officer out of respect for the family’s privacy during this challenging period.

The spokesperson stressed the delicacy of the situation and the importance of handling it with the utmost sensitivity and compassion.

The statement conveyed, “It is with great sorrow and sadness that we confirm the passing of a respected Nigeria Customs Service official who was at the National Assembly for a committee engagement.

“As a mark of respect for the family, the officer’s identity will not be disclosed at this time.

“The House of Representatives sends its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased at this trying time. We acknowledge the valuable contributions he made to the Nigeria Customs Service and our country.

“The House of Representatives is prepared to assist in understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident and is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to ensure that all necessary procedures are followed.

“The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD., extended his condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of a committed public servant. Our thoughts are with his family during this challenging moment.”
