Sonic the Hedgehog finds the little dude, who comes to Earth from an alternate dimension, on the run from both the military and Robotnik and his minions. During the course of the festivities, he mentions that a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency escape route in case things get totally out of hand: the “Mushroom Planet.” He doesn’t elaborate, but no elaboration is really necessary. It’s a planet filled with mushrooms, as we see in the first mid-credits scene (via The Cinemaholic).
In it, we see that this is where Sonic has sent Robotnik, with the not-so-good Doctor sporting a chrome-dome obviously inspired by his video game depiction; he muses that he’d like to get home by Christmas, and we see that he’s in possession of one of Sonic’s blue quills. It’s a cool shout-out and a funny aside, but the second mid-credits sequence is where the good stuff is.
The scene shows us a grand vista overlooking a forest on Earth, where — unseen by anyone — a ring portal opens, and who should come leaping out of it but Tails, the two-tailed fox who is Sonic’s longtime companion in the video games. Checking a tracking device, the little guy says, “If these readings are accurate, he’s here — I found him! I just hope I’m not too late.” He then spreads his… er, tails and goes helicopter-ing off in a very familiar fashion.
Sweet! Not only is Robotnik characteristically undeterred in his quest to take down Sonic (and Carrey has already expressed his willingness to return to the role), but Tails is now in play, ready to lend a hand (or a tail, or two) to his speedy blue buddy. Here’s hoping Sonic hits its stride at the box office; the flick is in theaters now.
