The governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, has announced a significant salary increase for medical doctors in the region, raising their pay from N150,000 to N500,000.

This increase is specifically aimed at newly hired medical professionals working in the state’s primary healthcare facilities.

The announcement was made during a health initiative launch, which also included the introduction of a Drug Revolving Fund and the provision of medical equipment to general hospitals.

Nwifuru highlighted that his government has allocated more than N10 billion towards enhancing healthcare facilities, procuring necessary equipment, and strengthening the workforce throughout Ebonyi.

“To address workforce deficits, we have hired 195 healthcare professionals—including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists—who have now been assigned to general hospitals to enhance healthcare delivery,” he stated.

The governor characterized this event not merely as a ceremony but as a “vital step” toward rejuvenating the healthcare system in the state and delivering on the health commitments of his administration’s People’s Charter of Needs.

“The health sector in Ebonyi has long endured issues such as inadequate funding, staffing shortages, and lack of equipment. This situation must change immediately,” he emphasized.

“We are unveiling the Drug Revolving Fund today to guarantee that essential medications are consistently available in our hospitals. This fund’s revolving model ensures sustainability, transparency, and accountability.”

“This initiative is crucial for our rural communities, allowing them access to quality medications at reasonable prices. We have already supplied over 60% of key medications, and this effort will continue until we reach full coverage. I urge all healthcare personnel and facility managers to uphold integrity and professionalism in managing these resources.”

“Additionally, we are providing state-of-the-art medical supplies, including hospital beds, mattresses, patient monitors, drip stands, and other essential equipment.”

“These items are not merely aesthetic; they are life-saving tools. This investment, exceeding one billion naira, is a significant advancement in transforming Ebonyi’s healthcare sector. We are also collaborating with institutions to train and continually develop our health workers to international standards.”

“I appeal to community leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society to assist in overseeing and safeguarding these investments. Health facilities belong to the community, and this ownership entails responsibility. Ensuring accountability is not optional, but a fundamental duty.”

“Any misuse of public resources will be addressed decisively, as demonstrated by our recent actions in the sector.”

“Our vision encompasses establishing specialist hospitals in all three senatorial districts to offer advanced healthcare, curb medical tourism, and save lives. We are also investigating partnerships focused on healthcare financing and the integration of digital health systems to enhance efficiency and accessibility.”

“Today marks a new era for health in Ebonyi. Let this event serve as a rallying call for health workers, communities, and all stakeholders. Collectively, we can create a system that embodies hope, healing, and health for everyone,” Governor Nwifuru concluded.
