The Federal Government led by President Tinubu has appointed the Governing Councils of Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education to ensure their effective operation over the next four years.
This action has happened despite opposition from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
During the inauguration in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, emphasized the importance of the councils and cautioned against inappropriate involvement in the institutions’ management.
Minister Mamman advised the councils to find ways to increase the institutions’ internal funding by seeking various sources of investment in education.
He stressed the need for the councils to focus on strategic planning, financial transparency, and overall performance to meet national educational objectives.
Moreover, Mamman urged the councils to address issues like unionism, cultism, and substance abuse among students by implementing proactive measures.
Representing the councils, the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Wole Olanipekun, highlighted the importance of a harmonious relationship between the councils and university management for institutional progress.
He encouraged Vice-Chancellors to collaborate with the councils to enhance the institutions’ development, emphasizing a constructive approach over destructive practices.
Chris Maiyaki, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), extended congratulations to the councils and pledged full support to strengthen the university system.
