A former police officer named Michael Effiong has been taken into custody by the Akwa Ibom State Police for allegedly pretending to be a current police sergeant.
The announcement was made by the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph Eribo, during a press conference highlighting the police activities since he took office on September 14, 2024.
“On September 26, 2024, around 11:50 a.m., our patrol team stopped a man dressed in a police uniform, who was later identified as CPL. Michael Effiong, from Nung Udoe, Ibesikpo Asutan LG,” he explained.
“Upon questioning, he revealed that he was dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force back in 2011 while stationed at the Abia State Command. He was unable to provide a reasonable explanation for being in police attire.”
A search of Effiong revealed a warrant card with the name Sgt. Michael Effiong, along with three passport photos depicting him with a Corporal rank. He is set to face legal action.
CP Eribo called on all officers to adhere to their duties diligently.
“We will recognize exemplary police work and put measures in place to discipline those who lapse,” he stated, emphasizing the need for justice and fairness for all citizens. “Any form of extortion will not be tolerated within our ranks,” he remarked.
