Allegations Against Former Governor Matawalle

Governor Dauda Lawal has accused his predecessor, Bello Matawalle, who currently serves as Minister of State for Defence, of involvement in banditry and providing protection to criminals.

Lawal claims that during Matawalle’s tenure as governor, he harbored bandits within the Zamfara State government residence.

In an interview with Television Continental (TVC) on Wednesday, Lawal urged Matawalle to resign from his ministerial role.

He noted an instance where the family of a permanent secretary faced kidnapping and allegedly had to pay the ransom through the government premises.

Governor Lawal remarked, “There were many problems regarding my predecessor. If I were him, stepping down would be the honorable choice to address these accusations. Information suggests he was deeply entangled in banditry issues.

“For instance, when a permanent secretary’s children were kidnapped, it was regrettable that a ransom was arranged through the government house. Numerous allegations indicate bandits were kept at that location. There are serious concerns.

Lawal expressed that the decision to appoint Matawalle as Minister of State for Defence by President Bola Tinubu was unjust to the residents of Zamfara State.

He reiterated that Matawalle should resign and work to clear his reputation.

“Honestly, if I were in his position, I would step back and confront these allegations until I can prove my innocence. That would be more dignified. Given the severity of the charges, it’s unreasonable that he remains in the Minister of Defence role.

“Matawalle could have taken the honorable route by stepping aside to address these claims, then return when cleared. Whether he wishes to remain in government or pursue other paths, that would be the right course of action. If I were faced with this, I would submit my resignation immediately,” Governor Lawal concluded.
