Guidelines Issued for Peaceful Protest in Plateau State

August 1 Armed Protesters Will Be Considered Criminals (via Primetweets)

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Plateau State is adamant that individuals carrying weapons during the forthcoming nationwide protest will be treated as criminals.

During a meeting with officers in Jos, NSCDC Commandant Alexander Barunde stressed the necessity of maintaining order during public demonstrations.

Highlighting the citizens’ right to express dissent towards governmental decisions, Barunde urged protest organizers to ensure a peaceful environment that does not allow troublemakers to disrupt the proceedings.

It was emphasized that using the protest as a mask for theft or destruction of public and private assets would result in severe repercussions.

Barunde urged the people of Plateau to prioritize the state’s welfare during the protest and be cautious of the potential risks involved.

He stated, “The organizers of the planned protest should aim to avoid unrest or actions that could incite chaos within the community.

The protest must remain non-violent, and participants should refrain from engaging in activities that could incite disorder; there are avenues for engaging in discussions with the government regarding any grievances.

Anyone participating in the protest with a weapon will be treated as a criminal element harboring malicious intentions; they will be apprehended and dealt with according to the law.”

Barunde reminded the residents of Plateau to approach the protest and its associated uncertainties with the state’s best interests at heart.

Moreover, NSCDC personnel were directed to uphold the principles of legality, maintain ethical conduct, and preserve the dignity of individuals while supervising the demonstrators.
