On a recent Friday afternoon, President Bola Tinubu met with his former political adversary, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, generating a wave of enthusiasm among the attendees at the National Mosque in Abuja.
This marked the first direct meeting between the two prominent figures after a gap of approximately 20 months post the 2023 elections, where they were once allies.
Both leaders participated in the Juma’at prayers and also attended the festive wedding ceremony of the daughter of Danjuma Goje, a former Gombe State governor and current Senator representing Gombe Central.
It’s important to remember that prior to the 2023 presidential elections, various candidates assembled at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja on February 22, 2023, to endorse the Peace Accord facilitated by the National Peace Committee (NPC).
This event saw the presence of key political figures such as Labour Party’s Peter Obi, PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, APC’s Bola Tinubu, AAC’s Omoyele Sowore, and NNPP’s Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Also in attendance were the former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Sultan of Sokoto, and distinguished former military leaders including Generals Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar, among others.
Since the election, which culminated in Tinubu’s victory—subsequently contested by Atiku and Obi in the courts—the two hadn’t met until this recent encounter, during which Atiku has continued to voice criticism against Tinubu’s policies since his inauguration on May 29, 2023.
