Recently, Dabiet Gilbert, an employee of the Nigerian Immigration Service, was found guilty by a Gombe State High Court and handed a one-year jail term for his involvement in a fraudulent job scheme.
Gilbert was charged with deceiving Akoh Accoustic and taking N800,000 under false pretenses of securing a job position within the Nigerian Correctional Services.
The charge against Gilbert stated that he fraudulently obtained the money from Akoh Daniel Accoustic on May 28, 2021, by falsely promising him a job with the Correctional Services, a claim Gilbert knew to be untrue, thereby violating the law.
Upon being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Gilbert admitted guilt to the fraud charge brought against him.
The EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, mentioned that Gilbert’s victim reported the scam to the EFCC after discovering the deceit and failing to recover the defrauded sum for a fictitious Correctional Service employment opportunity.
At the sentencing, Gilbert pleaded “guilty,” leading the prosecution counsel to request the court for the appropriate conviction and penalty. In the end, Justice H.H Kereng sentenced Gilbert to serve one year in prison or pay a fine of N60,000.
