Is ‘Onward’ Worth the Hype? Fans on Twitter Respond to Disney and Pixar’s Latest Release

It’s Onward and upward for this Disney-Pixar film. Since its release, Onward welcomed audiences of all ages, telling the story of love, loss, and the importance of family. (And it’s not just because Tom Holland and Chris Pratt are such cute friends.)

How did Onward do in box office sales compared to other Pixar releases? Is this film worth the social media hype? Here’s what we know about this animated movie, released during March 2020.

Disney and Pixar’s ‘Onward’ became the first non-sequel since ‘Coco’

Magic just isn’t that magical anymore. That is, until these brothers find a wizard staff left behind by their father. Onward tells the story of Ian and Barley Lightfoot as they go on a glorious quest together to have one more day with their dad.

The box office sales confirm that this was, by far, not Pixar’s best-selling release. The movie had a $40 million domestic opening, earning $68 million worldwide. For comparison, Pixar’s 2018 release, Incredibles 2, earned $180 million globally during opening weekend — one of the best opening weekends for an animated movie, according to Business Insider.

The studio’s last non-sequel, 2017’s Coco grossed $49 million for the three-day domestic weekend, earning $71.2 million domestically for the five-day Thanksgiving holiday frame. According to Deadline, the box office sales ultimately finalized at $183.5 million.

That doesn’t make the fan reaction to Onward any less exciting. According to Disney’s Instagram account, it’s in fact, the No. 1 movie in the world. Since the Onward’s premiere during early March, some moviegoers took to social media, sharing their love for the studios’ latest animated release.

‘Onward’ brought a few ‘firsts’ for Disney-Pixar animation

This was the first Pixar movie starring Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. This was the first one set in a half-fantasy-half-modern day. Additionally, Onward Pixar’s first non-sequel in over three years, coming after the release of Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, and Finding Dory.

Officer Spector, portrayed by Lena Waithe briefly interacts with Ian and Barley, mentioning that she has a girlfriend. That makes this police officer Pixar’s first openly LGBTQ character — the other being an LGBTQ couple in Finding Dory.

Disney and Pixar fans reacted to the premiere of ‘Onward’

Since the premiere of Onward, fans shared thoughts on the story and characters on social media. While some shared their love for Officer Spector, others thanked the creators for making a relatable story.

“Pixar just keeps cranking out bangers. Onward is yet another movie that follows Pixar’s standard of excellence. 9/10 Definitely go see it,” one fan said on Twitter.

“I’m an only child with two surviving parents but Onward still really got to me. Recently, I lost my best friend from high school and was sad I never got to say goodbye. This reminded me of my memories with her and gave me some catharsis. Thank you,” another Twitter user said.

Disney and Pixar’s Onward is now playing in theaters. Fans can stream other movies created by this studio, including Toy Story 4, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles, on Disney+.
