Kelly Marie Tran Reveals How She Really Felt About Rose Tico’s Role In ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’

Kelly Marie Tran joined the Star Wars saga in Rian Johnson’s film The Last Jedi. She played Rose Tico, a Resistance pilot who lost her sister in an epic space battle at the beginning of the film. Rose Tico returns in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Tran was at the press conference for The Rise of Skywalker on December 4. No one except the cast and filmmakers themselves had seen the film at that point. Now that fans have seen Rose Tico’s role in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Tran’s comments may have more context. The Rise of Skywalker is in theaters now.

Rose Tico became a main character in the new trilogy ensemble in The Last Jedi. She joined Finn (John Boyega) on his excursion to the galactic casino. In the end, Rose saved Finn’s life when he was going to sacrifice himself to take out the First Order’s ship.

Being in a Star Wars movie was not easy for Kelly Marie Tran. Fans who did not like The Last Jedi took it out on Tran because they didn’t like the character of Rose. Tran left social media because of the bullying, but has spoken out against it and received support.

Rose has a smaller role in The Rise of Skywalker. She’s stationed with General Leia (Carrie Fisher) and looking at monitors in most of her scenes. She does get to interact with Leia, since J.J. Abrams blended scenes of Fisher from The Force Awakens with new footage.

Even though Rose Tico had to remain back at headquarters while Finn, Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Rey ( https://www.cheatsheet.com/?p=1435465 ) went on the missions, Kelly Marie Tran said she enjoyed the scenes in which they all reunited.

“It was really wonderful. From the last time, there seems to be such a bond between everyone and also the new guys. Everyone just feels, it sounds so cheesy and so cliche, and it is but it truly feels like everyone’s a family and we’re all just there to have fun and be part of something that’s so much bigger than us as individuals. That’s a really cool thing to share with people.”

Making Carrie Fisher’s last scenes work

Maybe Rose Tico doesn’t get to fly a ship in The Rise of Skywalker, but she had a more important mission this time. Since the only way to have Leia in the movie was to use existing footage, it fell upon the other actors to blend new dialogue seamlessly into the movie. Kelly Marie Tran took her responsibility seriously.

“I think for myself, I can only speak for myself, there is sort of this idea that J.J.’s talked about ending nine films and Carrie was such a great part of all of that,” Tran said. “So I think for me personally, there was a lot of wanting to honor this thing and do right by this thing. I think that she’s really incredible in this movie.”
