Lagos Assembly Launches Investigation into Ex-Speaker Obasa Amid Fraud Claims

The Lagos State Assembly plans to investigate fraud allegations against former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was recently impeached.

Obasa’s impeachment occurred on January 13 while he was reportedly residing in Atlanta, Georgia.

He did not attend the Assembly’s session on January 27.

The lawmakers cited corruption and authoritarian behavior as reasons for his removal. In response to these claims, Obasa stated on the weekend that the impeachment process was not legitimate and asserted his role as the legitimate Speaker.

According to Lagos Assembly spokesperson Olukayode Ogundipe, the Assembly awaits Obasa’s return before acting further, including launching an investigation. He mentioned, “Once he’s back, we will address the various allegations against him.”

Ogundipe emphasized, “We’ve heard about different sums of money being allegedly misused by him, and we aim to investigate these claims in detail upon his presence.”

When asked if the Assembly would involve the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate Obasa, Ogundipe indicated that such decisions would be discussed when Obasa is present and might involve forming a committee for further examination. He confirmed, “Formal procedures will be strictly adhered to, and you should anticipate the House’s response in due time.”
