The Pelewura Market on Lagos Island began its demolition under the authority of the Lagos State Government on Friday.
Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, confirmed that compensation is being processed for market traders.
Gawat announced through his social media platform that the demolition is part of the efforts to align with the urban development plan for Lagos Island.
The New Media Aide to Governor Sanwo-Olu mentioned, “The Lagos State Government, with the Urban Development Office and The Lagos Building Control Agency, has assumed control of Pelewura. Compensation payment underway.
“We removed the location for Massey hospital, which is now operational. A similar fate awaits Pelewura, Bombata, and Jankara too.”
Gawat emphasized that the existing condition of Pelewara Market does not conform to the modern market structure envisioned for Lagos State.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu sanctioned the complete demolition and reconstruction of the market during the formal distribution of bank cheques and drafts to victims of the Docemo fire incident.
Sanwo-Olu assured that affected traders and occupants would receive compensation due to the demolition.
The Lagos State Government has not clarified whether the original market occupants will regain access to their stalls after the reconstruction.
