Lawyers Halt Court Sessions in Imo State After Lawyer’s Assassination

On Thursday, court activities in Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma in Imo State came to a standstill after the tragic murder of the well-known attorney, Chinedu Nwowu.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday evening when Nwowu was ambushed and fatally shot by unknown assailants in his hometown of Mgbidi.

Witnesses indicated that armed men obstructed his vehicle before shooting him.

The violent act has instilled fear across the region, with the motive behind the attack remaining unclear.

In response to this incident, the Orlu Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, to which the deceased belonged, announced a suspension of all court sessions in the Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma areas.

The association convened an emergency meeting to discuss the implications of the lawyer’s death.

Chukwuemeka Okoro, representing the branch, issued a statement confirming the meeting scheduled for the High Court in Mgbidi.

The statement emphasized: “Due to the brutal murder of our colleague, CHINEDU NWOWU, last night in Mgbidi, all lawyers from the Oru/Oguta Forum are called to an emergency meeting this morning at 10 a.m. at the High Court, Mgbidi. The High Courts in Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma will remain closed today. Please arrive on time.”

Ben Amukamara, the NBA Chairman for Orlu Branch, informed our correspondent that members were already gathered at the Mgbidi High Court addressing the incident.

He reaffirmed that no courts would be in session in the affected regions of Oguta, Mgbidi, and Omumma.

As of the report’s publication, the state police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, had not provided any information regarding the investigation into the lawyer’s death.
